To escape/unwind-
Your day has been never ending, the phone keeps ringing, the boss is constantly looking over your shoulder, and then there is the traffic you have to face on the way home. But getting home does not neccessarily give you relief either, because it can be followed by crying kids, dinner to make, homework to supervise and dishes to wash.
But then you get those few minutes at the end of the day to sit down and unwind, you pick up the romance novel you have been reading and suddenly you are transported to another place and even a different time. Away from the boss, the kids, and chores you get to escape the boundaries of life and live vicariously through another persons love romance relationship.
For hope-
Usually the character's romance life is in shambles in the begining. Which in turn gives us hope because even our own romance life is not that painful. But as the story unwinds and pieces of love begin to fall into place, we can imagine our own love life piecing together too. Sometimes they even give us wonderful romance ideas to be tried out on our loved ones!
Our hero-
Then there is the handsome hero, who may not always start out as the most pleasant man, slowly transforms into the man he was meant to be. He writes love letters to read to his beloved or even sits down to read some love poems to her. While we know this hero does not exist, we become engrossed and probably even fall a little in love with our man of the hour, out to solve the problems at hand.
And Predictability-
Finally, no matter how many twist and turns there are to the story, we know that in the end they always end up together, "Happily-Ever-After".
